LDI’s Representative at the UN Youth Assembly

LDI’s Operations Manager and Youth Coordinator Jasmin Lilian Diab took part in the United Nations Youth Assembly 2017 held during the month of August at the UN Headquarters in New York City, USA.

This event was endorsed by Ambassador Macharia Kamau, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kenya to the United Nations, Ambassador Álvaro Mendonça e Moura, the Permanent Mission of Portugal to the United Nations, as well as Ambassador Dr. Amrith Rohan Perera, the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations, and organized by H.E. Ms. Simona-Mirela Miculescu Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UN Office in Belgrade.

The Assembly brought together participants from over 100 countries. It constitutes the global gathering of the next generation of world leaders, social entrepreneurs, activists, and champions of sustainable development. It provides a unique platform for meaningful dialogue and partnership between youth, civil society, the private sector, and the United Nations. At the assembly, young people are equipped with the necessary tools, knowledge, and skills to create action-oriented solutions that help achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Lebanon Dialogue Initiative (LDI) was the sole organization from Lebanon represented at the Assembly.

The conference tackled a variety of topics under four interrelated tracks – social, economic, environmental, and youth. Sessions are organized in the format of panels, workshops, debates, keynotes, and presentations.

LDI contributed in six main panel discussions including: “Shaping The Narrative of an Inclusive Society,” “Out With Exclusion, In With Rights,” “Using Values-Based Communications and Dialogue for Social Inclusion,” “Dialogue for Change: Bringing the Youth Perspective into Global Decision Making,” “Youth, Peace, and Security,” and “Dear World: An Interactive Storytelling and Portrait Experience” where Diab discussed LDI’s experience is organizing the 2016 International Dialogue Forum, as well as LDI’s vision for the future in the areas of dialogue and their aspirations and work toward designating Lebanon a land of dialogue among civilizations and cultures.

The Youth Assembly – now in its 20th session – presents both an enormous opportunity and a challenge to stimulate and ensure youth engagement and participation in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. With an emphasis on the 2030 Agenda’s principle of “leaving no one behind”, the conference will tackle cross-cutting issues with innovative solutions. It provides capacity-building opportunities and the necessary tools for participants to develop a better understanding of their role and the steps they can take toward action and implementation.
