Cedre Conference Q&A Session at Le Gray Hotel, Beirut

Lebanon Opportunities organized a special session on the ‘CEDRE’ conference at Le Gray Hotel, Down Town Beirut.

The presentation included a rundown and analysis of the pledges made, their potential applications, and the opportunities it presents to the private sector in contracting, investment, job creation, and the general economic growth.

The event gathered a group of engaged stakeholders, policy makers, business owners as well as civil society leaders.

The publisher of Lebanon Opportunities Ramzi Hafez moderated the discussion led by the Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister & Conference Team Leader Dr. Nadim Munla who explained the government’s vision and how the amounts raised will be allocated towards projects mainly in infrastructure, environment, and energy.

Munla stated that 40 percent of the investment program’s projects could be financed through PPPs and consequently these investments will not have a negative impact on the budget deficit where the private sector is invited to invest between six and seven billion dollars in these projects.

Around 60 percent of the investment program will be financed through grants and through soft loans at interest rates of less than 1.5 percent over periods ranging from 20 to 30 years, according to Munla.

The 10-year infrastructure plan “is expected to bring the growth rates back to 6 and 7 percent and create tens of thousands of job opportunities for the Lebanese youth,” with investments supporting over 250 projects in sectors that include transport ($8.8 billion required in investments), water and irrigation ($4.9 billion), sewage ($2.6 billion), electricity ($5.6 billion), communications ($700 million), and tourism ($264 million). Many of these projects were previously discussed but never implemented or funded, including the development of periphery roads surrounding Beirut.
