MC2CM Hosts Sub-Regional Event on Migration Communications in Local Governance

Aiming at fostering the discussion on communicating issues on migration, diversity and inclusion at city level in the Southern Mediterranean, the event on 18th and 19th September brought together communication specialists representing cities affiliated with the MC2CM network, as well as other South Mediterranean cities and city associations with an interest in the project.

This was the 1st sub-regional event of the 2nd Phase (2018-2021) of the Mediterranean City-to-City Migration Project (MC2CM), funded by the EU and SDC and held under the auspices of the City of Tunis. During the workshop, participants shared practical experience on actions at local level which support a fact-based and balanced narrative on migration.

Michael Spindelegger, Director General of ICMPD, along with representatives from both partner organizations met with the Mayor of Tunis, Souad Aderrahim to discuss the advancement of the MC2CM project. The Mayor renewed her commitment to working with the three partners on the future of the project.

During the event, participants, including those from Tunis, shared best practices which included showcasing how a municipal theatre became a symbolic place of cultural exchange for migrants and the local population. The city of Amsterdam shared an example of an app they launched to support newly arrived migrants.

One of the main objectives of the MC2CM project, as it launches its second phase of implementation, is to promote a realistic and fair narrative on migration and intercultural dialogue, and to foster cultural diversity and mutual understanding.

This was the first sub-regional event the 2nd Phase (2018-2021) of the MC2MC project, funded by the EU and SDC and held under the auspices of the City of Tunis. The event capitalised on the Migration Media Award Ceremony which was held on 19 September 2018 and other related events organized by ICMPD on the topic of the narrative on migration.
