Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in the elderly had been a long neglected issue in the Lebanese and Arab societies. In the past 25 years, a wealth of experience has been developed worldwide. It was time for Lebanon to share in the expertise available; and apply it in the Lebanese community to fight the stigma and discrimination surrounding the disease. The purpose of establishment of AAL, in 2004, was to: 1.Promote awareness and understanding of the disease 2.Respect the human rights of people with the disease 3.Recognize the key role of families and carers 4.Provide access to health and social care 5.Stress the importance of optimal treatment after diagnosis 6.Take action to prevent the disease, through improvements in public health
