The Euro-Mediterranean region has a long tradition in science diplomacy as an established tool for cooperation between Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries and Europe; a vibrant area where philosophies, cultures, knowledge and innovation have been exchanging for millennia, creating the basis for common understanding and shared identities.

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) plays an indispensable role as a privileged dialogue forum for its 43 Member States and has been horizontally supporting science diplomacy since its creation through its different strands of sectorial cooperation on research and innovation, higher education, food systems, blue economy, women empowerment, youth, climate change, and water.

With the aim of gathering the main stakeholders operating in the field of science diplomacy, most notably scientists and diplomats, the UfM, under the leadership of its Co-Presidencies (the European Union and Jordan), is organising the Euro-Mediterranean Conference on Science Diplomacy taking place in Barcelona on 3 October 2023.

The goal of this Conference will be to highlight the state-of-art of science diplomacy in the Mediterranean, challenges and opportunities, and discuss the way forward as a community of practice.
